The first hour is mostly me trying to understand how the two of you actually operate, rather than adjudicating anything. Nobody is asked to summarize the problem fairly, and I will not be keeping score. Partners often arrive braced for a referee, and are surprised when I am more interested in the sequence than in the verdict. What happened last Tuesday matters less than what always happens, and by the end of the session most people can already describe their own pattern more clearly than when they walked in. That description is the beginning of the work. My practice grew through recommendation rather than advertising, which I take as a sign that people left feeling fairly treated.
