I believe the honest thing to say about this is that it takes longer than anybody wants to hear, and that saying otherwise is a disservice. People are told six months and then feel defective at month nine. So I will not do that. Starting over reliably takes longer than the encouraging version suggests, and knowing the real timeline in advance prevents an enormous amount of unnecessary self-criticism along the way. We set realistic expectations at the outset. Realistic is more useful than reassuring when you are the one living it. People find me through other people, generally ones who appreciated being told the truth about how long it takes. That is the standard I keep. If you were told six months, get in touch and we can talk about what it actually requires. Realistic timelines prevent a whole lot of unnecessary self-criticism.
