My clients tend to arrive mid-apology: sorry for rambling, sorry for crying, sorry for taking up my time. They are anxious high-achievers who have been holding their breath for years. Before private practice I worked in nonprofit community programs, and those years left me with lasting respect for how much people manage invisibly. That background trained me to notice the strain behind a composed face, and to take it seriously without making it a crisis. As a gay man, I am proud that trans and gender-nonconforming adults make up much of my practice, and prouder still that they stay. I try to embody a calm that clients can borrow until they grow their own. I offer therapy in English and in American Sign Language (ASL). In our work together, the apologies can stop. You get to take the full hour, say the unpolished version, and breathe. Reaching out is the hardest part; everything after that, we do side by side.
