The myth worth dispensing with is that this is permanent. A great many people arrive having concluded that they are simply someone this happened to and will always be someone it is still happening to, and they have organized their expectations accordingly. That is not what the evidence shows. PTSD is among the more treatable conditions when it is approached properly, and the majority of people who complete a decent course of treatment see substantial change. I am not promising you an outcome, because nobody honest does that. I am telling you that the pessimism you arrived with is not supported by what actually happens. I learned the job in crisis services, where I saw people at their worst and then, sometimes years later, saw how far they had come. That view is not available to everybody. If you have concluded this is permanent, I would like to argue with you about it.
