
Here is what I think makes this work: you have to be able to say the unflattering thing out loud without watching my face for a reaction. Almost everything useful follows from that one condition. People arrive running on empty and then apologize for it, as though needing rest were a defect of character. It is not, and the apologizing is usually part of what wore them down in the first place. We look at where your energy actually goes, including the parts that feel too small to bother mentioning, because those are often the ones doing the steadiest damage. Then we work out what you are allowed to put down. Not all of it, but more than you currently think. I sat in the other chair first, years ago, and I remember how long it took me to say anything true in it. I have never forgotten that. You can take your time here, and you will not be hurried.
