The single thing I would tell every new client is that you are almost certainly not bad at talking to each other. You are good at a particular sequence that happens to end badly, and you have both had a lot of practice at it. Communication patterns are learned as a pair, which means neither person owns the problem and neither can be blamed for it in isolation. That shift in framing takes an enormous amount of heat out of the room. We then look at the specific junctions where it reliably goes wrong, which are usually fewer than either of you imagines. My earlier work was in nonprofit and social-work adjacent roles before this, where I learned to be practical about what people can realistically change under pressure. Expect achievable rather than ideal. If you have concluded you are simply bad at this, I suspect you are wrong.
