People usually contact me about three weeks after the decision is technically made, while they still cannot say it out loud to anybody. That gap is the moment, and it is a good one to make use of. Whatever your next season turns out to be, the part nobody warns you about is how long you spend not being good at things you used to be good at. That is not evidence you chose wrong. It is simply what the middle of a change feels like, and knowing it in advance takes a surprising amount of weight off. We work on the practical ground first and let the confidence follow, because it does follow, in that order and almost never the other way round. Research came first for me and then the room, because the questions I cared about could not be answered from behind a desk. If you have already decided and have not told anyone, you can say it here first.
