
There's a small thing that happens in my practice that I never tire of: the exhale. Someone says the whole truth about what their mind does, and their shoulders drop an inch. That exhale is the sound of the work starting. Most of my clients arrive on edge, worn down by scanning every situation for what could go wrong. Compulsions are the other piece: the double-checking, the redoing, the endless asking just to be sure. Our work together is structured and brisk, with goals on the table and progress reviewed out loud. I practice acceptance and commitment therapy because I have watched it hand people their lives back. I now supervise newer clinicians, and I hold my own work to the same standard I ask of theirs.
