
If I could get a single plain fact across on day one, it would be this: what you feel is not a moral failing, it is a treatable condition wearing a very convincing disguise. For many of the people I work with, the day's first and hardest task is simply getting out of bed, and it can feel absurd to admit that out loud. It is not absurd at all. We start exactly there, at the real floor of the thing, and build upward from something honest. I spent a long run working shoulder to shoulder with other clinicians in a group practice before striking out on my own, and all those years made me a plainer, less self-serious version of this job. I skip the mystique and talk like a regular person. If mornings have become the hardest part of your day, say so, and we will begin right there.
