People generally reach out when avoidance stops being sustainable. For years it is possible to simply not go to certain places, not see certain people, and not think about certain things, and then the arrangement becomes too expensive or something forces the issue. That collapse of the workaround is the usual trigger. Survivors often build extremely effective systems of avoidance that function well for a decade or more, and the systems are not stupid; they simply carry a cost that compounds quietly. We look at what the arrangement has been costing and what could be reclaimed, and it is usually more than people expect. I worked in a completely different field before this, which perhaps makes me more interested than most in what a strategy costs to maintain. Everything has a running cost. If the arrangement has stopped working, get in touch. Reclaiming a place or a person is often quicker than anybody expects.
