The first hour contains no requirement to describe what happened. I ask what you would like to be different, how you are sleeping, what your ordinary week looks like, and what you have already tried. If you want to say more than that you can, and if you would rather not, we still have plenty to work with. People are often surprised by this. Post-traumatic difficulties are treatable without a detailed narrative account, and the first session is mainly about establishing whether you feel steady enough with me to do the work at all. That judgement is yours to make and you are entitled to take your time over it. I came to this work through my own time as a client, in a situation where I was asked for far more than I was ready to give. It was not useful. I do not repeat it. If the prospect of being asked to explain has kept you away, it should not.
