The person who usually finds me has a life that looks entirely successful and cannot enjoy any part of it without checking first that nothing has gone wrong. They describe themselves as cautious by nature and have never considered another explanation. Caution of that intensity is usually learned rather than innate. Trauma installs a habit of checking that persists long after the circumstances that justified it, and because it operates continuously it stops being visible as a habit at all. We make it visible first and then we work on reducing it. Both stages take a while and both are entirely achievable. Early on I was in crisis services, where I saw how quickly people learn to check and how long the habit outlasts the reason for it. If you cannot enjoy anything without checking first, get in touch. Checking is learned, and what is learned can be reduced.
