
I believe therapy earns its keep when something in your actual week changes. Insight is pleasant, but I would rather you got on the plane. A fear of flying responds to an ordered, repeatable sequence better than almost anything else I treat, which is why I like working on it. We rehearse the parts that can be rehearsed, we build the tolerance you cannot shortcut, and we do it in an order that keeps each step manageable. We also rehearse what to do when the day itself goes badly, because a plan that only works in ideal conditions is not much of a plan. You will know exactly what is coming before it comes. I spent a stretch in administration and came back to clinical work because I missed doing something measurable. This is measurable, and I will tell you honestly how far I think we can get and roughly how long it should take. If there is a trip you keep postponing, let us put a plan to it.
