He's the guy everyone calls easygoing, right up until he isn't. His temper shows up in traffic, at the dinner table, in messages he regrets by morning, and he's tired of apologizing for it. The men I work with usually arrive after a moment they wish they could take back, and my first job is to show them that the moment doesn't have to define them. Managing anger begins with noticing what happens in the sixty seconds before you blow, and that noticing is a skill anyone can build. We work within a cognitive-behavioral framework, catching the beliefs that turn small irritations into eruptions. I've sat with many men who assumed they were beyond help, and not one of them turned out to be right. I'll tell it to you straight when you need to hear it, and I'll stay in your corner while you do. I started out in community mental health, and I carry that open-handed spirit into private practice. If this sounds like you, or someone you're trying to be better for, I'd be glad to hear from you.
