People assume therapy means digging up the past until you cry. Sometimes it is that. More often, it's learning why your body still behaves as if the danger never ended, and then resetting the alarm. Group work was my training ground before I moved to individual practice, and it showed me how quickly shame shrinks once it's spoken aloud. I now work with service members at every stage, still serving or long since out. When flashbacks arrive, we treat them as an outdated alarm rather than a personal failing, and we retrain that alarm with patience. When relapse happens, and for many people it does, we mine it for information and keep going. I'm nonbinary, and being met without assumptions is something I try to hand every client on day one, because I know exactly what it's worth. My approach is matter-of-fact, and you'll always know why we're trying what we're trying. If that sounds useful, I'm accepting new clients.
