You are probably reading this because someone is gone and the ordinary machinery of your life has stopped making sense. Perhaps you are functioning well enough on the outside and privately astonished at how much effort that takes. Losing someone does not only remove a person; it removes a set of habits, a future you had assumed, and often a version of yourself that only existed around them. That is a lot to absorb at once, and most people are given about two weeks of grace before everyone else moves on. We work at the pace the actual loss requires, and we make room for the parts that feel unsayable. I think of this as a craft I am still learning, particularly in this area, where the temptation to say something comforting and useless is constant. I would rather be quiet and accurate than soothing and wrong. If any of that sounds like where you are, write to me.
