What I would want every new client to understand is that you are allowed to want this to stop affecting you without wanting to do anything about the person responsible. Those are separate questions and only one of them is therapy. People get stuck there constantly. Recovering from abuse does not oblige you to confront anybody, to forgive anybody, to make a report, or to reach any particular conclusion about what should happen next. Those decisions are yours and they can remain permanently undecided if you prefer. Our work is about your life now, and it proceeds perfectly well without any of them being settled. Before private practice I was in crisis services, where I watched people delay getting help because they thought treatment would require action they were not prepared to take. It does not. If that has been the obstacle, it can be removed.
