New clients are almost never told this: the discomfort you are feeling is a sign of accurate perception rather than of poor adjustment. Things really are harder at the moment. Your reaction is proportionate to the actual conditions you are in. People rarely believe this. Starting over involves a temporary drop in competence at nearly everything, and most people interpret that drop as evidence about themselves rather than as a predictable feature of the situation. We correct that interpretation early, because carrying it makes an already difficult period a lot worse than it needs to be. Caregiving was the background of my childhood and watched people absorb difficult circumstances while concluding privately that they were failing at them. That misreading does a lot of damage. If you have been treating a hard situation as a verdict, get in touch. The drop is temporary even when it does not feel temporary.
