The myth I would most like to retire is that anger work means learning to count to ten. Counting to ten is a pause button, and my clients are here for a different machine. The men I work with are rarely out of control everywhere; more often they are careful all day and combustible in one kitchen. Managing anger, done properly, means changing what the moment means before it arrives. My approach is cognitive-behavioral: we map the sequence from spark to eruption, then interrupt it earlier and earlier. I am Jewish, and I bring a generational respect for wrestling honestly with hard things. Before private practice I worked in nonprofits, which cured me of both naivety and cynicism. In this specialty, I am used to being underestimated for about twenty minutes. I will tell it to you straight, respectfully and without a script. If the pause button has stopped working, come find out what else there is.
