There's a myth that you have to hit bottom before therapy can help, and I'd like to retire it for good. Most people I work with look fine on paper and feel worn down in private. My early years were spent in nonprofit work, where I noticed how rarely anyone gets asked what they actually want. These days much of my practice focuses on drinking: the kind that crept up slowly and started making decisions for you. I treat ambivalence as information rather than resistance, because wanting to change and not wanting to change usually live side by side. In session I talk like a person, not a textbook, and yes, I sometimes swear. I know some women have been waiting years to say certain things out loud to someone who finally gets it. Whenever you're ready, even slightly ready, my door is open.
