
How much of today did you actually get to keep? Not the hours on paper, but the ones that were yours rather than spent satisfying a demand you never agreed to. For a lot of the people I see, the honest answer is not many, because rituals expand to fill whatever space they are given. We start by drawing an accurate map of where the time goes, then we take it back deliberately rather than all at once. We also look at who else has been recruited into the routine, because these things rarely stay contained to one person. I will not ask you to white-knuckle anything, and I will not pretend the fear is silly. I spent my first working life in an entirely different field, which means I remember what it is like to be a competent adult who cannot explain why one particular thing is impossible.
