Our first hour is largely me trying to work out what has actually changed, which is often less obvious than it sounds. People arrive naming one event and leave having identified three or four connected ones that all landed in the same year. That mapping is really useful. A transition rarely arrives alone, and the reason a seemingly manageable change has flattened someone is usually that it was the fourth thing rather than the first. We count them all. Most people are relieved to discover the total, because the total explains the reaction. I came to this work through my own period as a client, at a point when I had counted one change and was actually managing several. Counting helped. If you have named one thing and suspect there are more, get in touch. The total usually explains the reaction entirely. Counting is usually the first relief.
