The person who usually finds me is the most responsible one in their family. They double-check things nobody asked them to check, they apologize preemptively, and they are privately terrified of causing harm they would never actually cause. That combination is the signature of OCD far more often than the tidy stereotype people picture. We name the pattern accurately first, because most arrive having been told for years that they are simply high-strung. Naming it correctly is not a label for its own sake; it changes what the treatment should look like. Then we get to work on the part that actually maintains it. I grew up around caregiving, so being the steady one in a household is familiar territory to me. I have a lot of respect for it and I also know what it costs.
