
What if this is just how it is now? That question arrives quietly and it tends to frighten people more than anything dramatic, because it suggests the current arrangement is permanent rather than temporary. Usually it is not. The next season of a life is rarely visible from inside the one that is ending, which is why this stage feels so much like a dead end rather than an interval. We work on tolerating the not-knowing while also doing the practical things that make the following thing possible. Both halves matter, and most people attempt only one of them. Hospital and intensive outpatient settings showed me a great many people at the exact point where they were certain nothing would ever change, and then it changed.
