What would I do if nobody would ever find out? That question tends to produce a a lot faster answer than any amount of careful deliberation, which is why I ask it early and why people are often startled by their own reply. It cuts through a lot. Standing at a crossroads usually involves at least one option that has already been ruled out for reasons belonging to someone else, and identifying which one that is tends to be the whole job. We find it and then we look at whether the reasons still apply. Often they belonged to a version of your life that has already ended. I have asked that question in this room for years and the speed of the answers still surprises me. People know. What they lack is permission to say it.
