You are probably here because something that ended a long time ago has not finished with you, and the gap between how long ago it was and how present it still feels has become difficult to explain to anybody. That gap is the defining feature. Post-traumatic responses do not observe chronology. Something from fifteen years ago can arrive with the full intensity of last week, which is why being told it is in the past helps nobody at all. We work with how it actually behaves rather than how it ought to behave, and that alone tends to be a real relief. I supervise newer clinicians as well as running my practice, and the most common thing I have to point out is that reminding someone of the date does not help. It never has. If the gap has become impossible to explain, you will not have to explain it here.
