After a long time in this work, the pattern I see most often is people apologizing for needing the hour they have already paid for. They arrive with a list of everyone else's needs and treat their own as an indulgence requiring justification. My practice centers on women's issues, which in daily terms means the accumulated weight of being responsible for other people's comfort. We look at where that expectation came from, what it costs, and what happens when you set a small piece of it down. We also look at the price of being the person who absorbs everyone else's mood before anyone notices it needed absorbing. Nobody is asked to become someone else. I began in a university counseling setting and have never lost the habit of taking a young adult's concerns as seriously as anyone else's. Being dismissed does real damage. The hour is yours to use however you want. If you have been last on your own list, write to me.
