The person who usually finds me went through something difficult years ago, handled it impressively at the time, and was widely praised for how well they coped. They are still coping. That is rather the problem, because coping has become a full-time occupation that nobody else can see, and it has quietly displaced most of the things they used to enjoy. Post-traumatic difficulty in a capable adult often looks exactly like competence. The vigilance reads as conscientiousness, the avoidance reads as preference, and the flatness reads as maturity. We take that apart carefully. What emerges is usually someone who has been managing rather than living for a very long time. A large part of my earlier work was nonprofit and social-work adjacent, where the most impressive copers were reliably the ones nobody thought to ask about. If you have been praised for coping, get in touch.
