Here is the candid version: booking this appointment can feel like an admission that you are not managing, which is exactly the belief that keeps people from doing it for years. Almost everyone arrives slightly defensive, and that is entirely understandable. Nothing here is an evaluation. Parenting is difficult in ways that are structural rather than personal, and I have yet to meet someone whose difficulties were mainly the result of not caring enough. We start by getting the conditions clear, and only then look at what might be adjusted within them. I learned this work inside community mental health, where I worked with households under real strain and learned very quickly not to confuse circumstances with character. That distinction matters here more than anywhere. If defensiveness has been keeping you from asking, you would not be unusual. Defensiveness is information about how hard you have been trying, not a fault to be corrected.
