
People assume therapy means endlessly excavating your past. Often it simply means telling the truth about your present to someone equipped to help you change it. Community mental health trained me long before private practice did, and it left me allergic to pretension. My clients come to me depleted, having given their best hours to everyone but themselves. We treat stress as a signal worth decoding rather than noise to be endured. Much of our work is telling the truth in useful detail, then acting on what it shows us. I have particular respect for clients who were raised to keep everyone else comfortable. I keep a steady presence in the room, and I do not flinch at hard subjects. We will make sense of things at a human pace. You bring the honesty, and I will bring the nerve. If you are done white-knuckling your way through the months, I am ready when you are.
