What this work has shown me repeatedly is that people are looking for permission rather than technique. They already know what they need to stop doing, and what they lack is someone in a position to say that it is reasonable to stop. So I say it. Survivors often maintain arrangements long past the point of usefulness, because nobody ever formally released them from the requirement. A surprising amount of change follows from one plain sentence to that effect. We do the technical work as well, though it often turns out to be the smaller half of what actually helps. Almost all my clients arrive by recommendation, generally from someone who was given exactly that sort of sentence and remembered it. If you are waiting for permission, that is something I can give. Permission is an underrated intervention. One plain sentence can do what months of technique cannot.
