I believe the point of this work is that your history stops being the most interesting thing about you. Not erased, not resolved into a tidy narrative, simply demoted to one fact among many rather than the organizing principle of an entire life. That is a realistic aim. Survivors often fear that treatment means becoming permanently defined by what happened, spending years discussing it and building an identity around it. The opposite is what I am aiming at. The work should end with the subject occupying a lot less of your attention than it does today, rather than more of it. People find me through other people, generally from people who finished, moved on, and got on with things. That is the outcome I want for you. If you fear that treatment means becoming your history, it should mean very nearly the reverse. One fact among many is a perfectly reasonable place to end up.
