Nobody calls a therapist on a good day. People find me when the apologies start repeating themselves and the promises to do better stop convincing anyone, including you. Managing anger begins with an unglamorous truth: the outburst is the end of the story, never the beginning. The men I work with are decent people stuck in an indecent loop, and most are relieved to hear both halves of that sentence. My approach is cognitive-behavioral and refreshingly plain: find the thought, test the thought, replace the thought. I'm told I ask different questions, and different questions get different answers. I'll tell it to you straight, because vague reassurance never fixed anything. This is my second profession; my first involved plenty of conflict and no good way to handle it, which is partly why I'm here. If the promises have stopped working, maybe it's time for a method that does.
